I grew up in Flint and fell in love in Flint in 1953 at age 17, he was 15. My family still lives in Flint. I found that there was a support group without our knowing what to call it. Many gay and straight friends gave us teenagers a place to meet, party and just have safe fun. I had a 51 year relationship with my LTR Bill Swenor who passed away in March of 2005. We both left Flint in 1966 to find a safe haven in San Francisco. And we were one of 4,000 lucky couples that were able to get married in 2004. The marriage was later declared Null and Void 6 months later by the California Supreme Court. But it was one of the highlights of our over 50 years together. I wanted to say that I am proud to be a Michigander and have been interviewed by Tim from the University of Michigan in December of 2005. I hope I have added to a small part of Michigan GLBT History. I hope to see more in the future. I hope more of our old friends speak out about growing up gay or lesbian in Michigan.

I think this is important to have. I think he should be published in Flint Michigan. Flint has a good gay following, and lots of gay people. We need positive things like this to promote people feeling good about themselfs. And getting the news about all the positive stuff out there in Flint and Michigan for that matter.

I am the person mentioned on this site. I just received a letter from Phoenix, whereas, a friend of mine passed away. His brother sent me a copy of this site. I was surprised and amazed and wonder how I was chosen to be mentioned. Yes, I owned Studio D in Flint. It was the first legal, state chartered gay club in the United States. I encountered a Prosecutor who was very ambitious. He tried to shut down Le Stag Shoppe, my bookstore. In those days it was nudist books from the Sunshine Publishing company at Mays Landing, New Jersey. He failed in that case. Then he raided Studio D and all this created my legal situation. My trial lasted an hour, a little over 100 pages in the transcript. I was never allowed to testify. My attorney, (whom was hired by someone other than myself) sold me out to the Prosecutor. I recently ordered my files and it consists of over 1,050 pages. (Things that were never brought forth for my trial.) The facts prove my innocence. So about forty years later I will be going back to court to expunge my records. It will be added to my manuscript THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE HOLLYWOOD STAR. I owned the Hollywood Star newspaper and a publication called Gayboy. I am glad I haven't been forgotten.

Interesting information describing the transgendered history of Michigan (my home state). I am also happy to see that Ann Arbor, the city in which I lived until the late 1950s, has actually identified 'gender identity' as a 'hate crime' category. That is ahead of this area of California, certainly from in regards to employment and housing. I will certainly add a link to this site from the large Transsexual section of my domain (www.moss-fritch.com).

I am very impressed with your website. I am a Governor with the Human Rights Campaign and am on the Board of The Forum Foundation. LGBT history must be preserved.
