Technical Information
This information is provided to give a glimpse into the technical process of mounting this exhibit on the Internet.
The web pages for the exhibit are created dynamically from a database. Essentially, the template for displaying the images and events is filled in with the appropriate information each time that someone requests an item. This allows us to very easily maintain the exhibit, because layout changes only need to be made to the template once and then are automatically used for all of the items. We can also easily add more information to the database without having to change the overall structure of the exhibit.
The web pages are being served from an Apache web server running on the Linux operating system. The templates for the web pages, the data input forms, and the search engine were created using the PHP scripting language, and consist of approximate 8,000 lines of code. Data is stored in a MySql database with 16 tables. The images for the exhibit were scanned at 144dpi and then cropped and resized using Adobe Photoshop. All software and hosting services were generously provided by the School of Information at the University of Michigan.
For more information about the technical aspects of the exhibit, please e-mail the Webmaster (lgbtheritage@umich.edu).
